"the other where either I am one of the intimates, or no one is".

Cut and dried city . . . Regarding the first option, is it not possible that the intimacy generated is part of a waiting game. To cover real discomfort, the 'intimates' are waiting for your arrival on the scene (in the momment, the conversation, social setting ,etc.). Intimacy is so elusive. When I often felt I was building a bridge, I was thinking of someone else. A real disservice to the 'other' in the moment. Soemwhat like marking time at another person's expense.

The second option appears to be all too commmon. People talking each other.

- the world of 'schmoozing', that vacuous talk that says nothing, goal to milk someone for favor/business contact. (no passing judgement, it's often essential in the corp. and not-for- profit sector)

I would hope that a third option exists. Intimate, passionate exchange that thrives on inviting in 'the other'. That person(s) can be marginalized for a whole pack of reasons:

- too much material wealth.
- not enough 'toys'.
- too literate in the ways of cyberspace.
- not enough aof a 'geek'.
- and on and on.

I see the world of diaries as a place where bubbles of approachable moments get laid out, for all to see. It is risky, it is a sign of wonderful vulnerability, and yes, it can be selfserving too. A diary of osmosis would be wonderful. The shape and content, even the delivery mechanism would alter with the approach of a reader or contributor. The 'object' would, soemhow, react to emotion and objective needs of the reader/writer. How this would come about, I don't know. (Akin to 'the living machines of Aldous Huxley fame??)
